Ministry of Economic Development continues to improve Market Access for vulnerable Smallholder Farmers

Posted: Thursday, March 9, 2023. 1:16 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Government of Belize (GOB), through the Ministry of Economic Development’s (MED) Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) Program signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) for the upgrade of 4.7 miles of farm feeder road in the Valley of Peace (VOP) area.

This is as a result of fulfilling one of RRB’s main program objective of upgrading public infrastructure such as, roads, drainage, and information systems, in order to improve market access for poor and vulnerable smallholder farmers in all six districts of Belize.

The cost of the upgrading of the VOP farm feeder road is approximately BZD 2,200,000 million and is slated to begin in April of 2023.

Primary beneficiaries of this program include cooperatives such as the Valley of Peace Lagoon Farmers’ Cooperative Society Limited.

In 2018, the Government of Belize entered into an agreement with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for a loan, and with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for a loan and grant towards the implementation of the project “Resilient Rural Belize (Be-Resilient)” (RRB).

This is a 6 year programme (2018- 2024), and its overall goal is to increase farmers’ resilience and adaptation to climatic change.

Signing the MOA on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Development was its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Osmond Martinez and on behalf of the MIDH was its Chief Executive Officer, Victor Espat. Dr. Geraldo Flowers, RRB Program Manager and Evandale Moody, MIDH Chief Engineer both witnessed the signing.

Also present at the ceremony was the Area Representative and the Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing, Julius Espat, who gave the keynote address.
