By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In celebrating women’s month, around the country, outstanding Belizean women are being highlighted for their dedication and commitment to Belize’s growth and development.

Today’s highlight is on exemplary educator, Lela Balan Cowo.

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee… (Jer 1:5)

At a very young age, Lela began her educational journey. She was only 11 years old when she started High School.

After High School, she felt driven to study agriculture and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science Agriculture being her major.

Lela’s career took an unexpected path when she was granted an opportunity to teach early childhood education at the Santa Elena Baptist Preschool in 2009.

Seeing her dad working late hours of the night as a teacher, Lela never dreamt of becoming a teacher.

Little did she know it was a calling from the Lord.

With this new passion and desire, Lela pursued a degree in Primary Education since Early Childhood was not available at that time.

Lela knew from the first day she started teaching, this was what she loved.

Her passion grew tremendously and when the doors finally opened to further her studies in Early Childhood Education, she embraced it.

Lela says that choosing the Early Childhood Education profession was one of the best decisions she ever made.

“Being someone that children see as a role model, someone that contributes to children’s best start in life, or being someone that makes a life lasting impression in life; is the most rewarding feeling and career path,” she states.

Her goal is to establish best teaching practices which will benefit children’s spiritual, social, emotional, physical and cognitive development.

During the preschool years, children develop characteristics which will affect their lifelong love of learning. With this in mind, Lela noted that her vision will always be focused on the children’s happiness and their achievement.

Lela is an active member at Iglesia Evangelica El Calvario church in San Ignacio.

She was the leader/mentor of young girls and is now serving as a singer in the praise and worship team.

Her ultimate desire is for the Lord to continue using her to inspire, educate and guide the children that come before her and prepare them for their spiritual and educational journey.
