By Aaron Humes: The House of Representatives prepared for the second visit of Dr Tsai Ing-wen, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and the delegation from Taiwan to visit Belize in two weeks’ time by passing a motion this evening that officially welcomes her visit and reiterates Belize’s support for and friendship with the East Asian island nation.
Per the text of the motion, the Government also extends its commitment to the strong and healthy diplomatic bond between Belize and Taiwan and the close bilateral cooperation in multiple areas; reassures that the Governments of Belize and Taiwan will further deepen the diplomatic cooperation through the bilateral and multilateral channels of partnership, including as part of relations with the Central American Integration System (SICA) despite five members now having or establishing relations with the rival People’s Republic of China (PRC); reaffirms to stand with the people and the Government of Taiwan in solidarity to secure Taiwan’s democracy, freedom, human rights and self-determination, so as to maintain peace, stability and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and in the region; Calls on the international community to condemn any military threat, and other coercive actions that undermine Taiwan’s sovereign integrity, democracy, freedom, human rights and self-determination; and expresses its full support of Taiwan’s participation in related international organizations.
A copy of this resolution by House agreement will be presented to President Tsai and to the office of the Prime Minister as a tangible token of the friendship expressed herein.
This evening the Embassy of the Republic in Belize responded with a social media post extending “its sincere appreciation to the House of Representatives” noting that it and the 2022 motion to support Taiwan’s participation in international organizations “once again demonstrates the genuine friendship and strong partnership between Belize and Taiwan.”
It concludes, “We want to say “THANK YOU, Belize!”, and will always cherish the strong and healthy bonds between our two peoples and countries.”
President Tsai is due to address the House on her visit, which comes after Honduras’ planned defection to Beijing was announced earlier this month.
