Father of harassed ex-Canaan SDA student still pursuing justice

Posted: Thursday, March 30, 2023. 12:20 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The father of a former student of Canaan Seventh Day Adventist High School has reached out once again to the media to express his disappointment that since a teacher at the school allegedly sent his daughter inappropriate messages in January, there has been no definitive action taken by any authority against the teacher. The teacher has been placed on leave while an investigation was set in motion, but there’s been no update.

In an email to Breaking Belize News the father writes, “I am beyond disappointed. The system is supposed to work, it’s supposed to ensure justice is served. It’s to ensure that we are protected and that everyone is on the same playing field. Fairness.”

He outlines that per the Ministry’s guidelines, findings from the school’s administration should have been presented 25 days after the suspension, with a copy provided to the parent to allow for any potential appeal or further review.

But, he says, “Not only have I not received any formal or informal response from anyone. Not the school, not the ministry, not any of the committees or groups, organizations, and unions. Everyone was quick to call out the school for not acting fast enough and our children must be protected. Yet, when the time comes for these governing bodies to act, to follow the rules they came up with, they implemented, they are required to adhere to… Nothing happens.”

Additionally, the parent noted that the prior incident referenced in his child’s case is still unresolved in that that teacher was dismissed but no formal report was made to the Ministry, meaning their license is still valid and possibly that that teacher has found work elsewhere.

He concludes: “How, are we the people letting this happen? Letting them sweep these sorts of things under the rug. How are we, letting them protect pedophiles and predators?”

We will follow up with the Ministry of Education in due course.
