Belize National Teacher’s Union holds Annual Convention, elects new president

Posted: Tuesday, April 18, 2023. 8:09 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: While much of the business of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU)’s Annual Convention in Orange Walk Town last week was dominated by the race to succeed Senator Elena Smith as president, the Union had other matters on its agenda.

A statement from the BNTU says that at the Muffles College Auditorium, the attendees heard from their National Executive, branch leaders and internal committees and presentations from the Public Sector Workers’ Trust (PSWT), one of whose leaders, Nadia Caliz, is a BNTU representative and stalwart, and from the Tax Service on issues of pensions, retirement and paying income taxes.

Before the elections on Thursday, five motions were discussed and adopted as union resolutions. Ruth Shoman was elected the new president of the Union, with Jorge Mejia as first vice-president, Bay Rivas as secretary and Keisha Williams returned as treasurer.

Former Orange Walk Branch president Otilio Munoz was designated guest speaker and the convention was held under the theme of “BNTU: One Union, One Mission, One Voice.”

While Mejia and Rivas take their positions with immediate effect, Shoman formally succeeds Smith on June 1 per the Union constitution.
