Posted: Friday, April 21, 2023. 1:14 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Government of Belize, through the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE), under the Building Resilient MSME’s Accelerating Digitization Project with a value of USD$360,000.00 funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), opened its 3rd Digital Connect Center within the Department of Youth Services Center at the Russell Chiste Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga Town.

The Government noted that the Digital Connect Centers offer free access to computers, internet, and is a part of a national commitment from key collaborators to promote digital inclusion and bridging the digital divide, primarily in rural areas in need of technological services.

The center will serve the residents of Dangriga and surrounding areas with training in entrepreneurial development, business innovation and competitiveness for Micro Small Medium Enterprise (MSME); and it will also provide access to digital literacy trainings to upskill youths, women, the unemployed and the elderly.

Residents and entrepreneurs can now access business development information, connect with government agencies, improve their technological capacity, and engage with others through mentorship and advisory services to enhance their economic growth.

The Digital Connect Centers will connect entrepreneurs to BELTRAIDE’s Virtual Knowledge Center (VKC) platform which provides access to training materials for enterprise growth and innovation, the MSME Directory, a Job Portal, and access to other support services and catalogues designed to propel business development.

The launch represents an investment of USD15,000 from the UNDP with contributions from BELTRAIDE, the Department of Youth Services & Humana People to People Belize.

Attendees included Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Transport; Louis Zabaneh, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology; Linda Maguire, UNDP Deputy Regional Director of Latin America and the Caribbean, and Ian King, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative of Belize.

Remarks were delivered by Mayor of Dangriga, Robert Mariano, Dr. Leroy Almendarez, Executive Director of BELTRAIDE, and Denise Antonio, UNDP Resident Representative of Jamaica and Belize.
