By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City youth who was convicted of a firearm-related offense this week will not be going to prison, after the Magistrate exercised discretionary powers to impose a non-custodial sentence.

Nineteen-year-old Daniel Tillett appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing a single charge of kept unlicensed ammunition in relation to two bullets found in his possession. He immediately pleaded guilty to the charge and Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford imposed a fine of $500 plus $5 cost of court.

Tillett needs to pay his fine by July 21 or he will face five months in prison for defaulting. On Tuesday May 16, Tillett was being pursued by police and managed to evade them initially but was later apprehended. When captured, the officers found two .9mm rounds in his pants pocket.

We note that on Monday, Floyd Robinson Jr. was found guilty of a firearms offense but was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
