By Rubén Morales Iglesias: BEL has been restoring electricity following an unplanned widespread blackout that affected most of the country on Friday morning.
“Our teams are currently investigating the cause of an unplanned power outage, currently affecting: entire Orange Walk, entire Belize, San Pedro, entire Cayo District. Caye Caulker,” BEL said at 9:26 on Friday morning after the power failure which occurred at around 9:10 am.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding and patience while we work to rectify as soon as possible.”
By 10:50 am, power had been restored in the Sunset Park area of the Belize District. BEL reported that the company had restored power to a portion of San Ignacio at 9:43 am, Belize City at 10:03 am, the entire San Ignacio at 10:27 am, all areas in Ladyville at 10:44 am, the entire Belmopan at 11:04 am, the entire San Pedro fully restored at 11:07 am, and the portion of Orange Walk District that was affected by 11:30 am.
When the blackout occurred, BEL clients from different parts of the country reported being without electricity on BEL Power Updates on social media. Reports came Belize City and surrounding villages; Belmopan; San Ignacio and Santa Elena in Cayo and villages like Duck Run and Bullet Tree; from the Orange Walk District including Palmar and Yo Creek; San Pedro, Ambergris Caye; and Stann Creek including villages like Placencia.
