Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints partners with Red Cross to aid mobility in Belize

Posted: Saturday, May 27, 2023. 7:21 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have recently embarked on a significant charitable project in Belize, in alignment with the Church’s teaching to “love thy neighbor as thyself,” as found in Matthew 22:39. In a heartwarming display of cooperation, the Church, in collaboration with the Red Cross, has donated and fitted mobility devices for over 360 individuals in Belize.

Through the generosity of Church members worldwide, the initiative saw the Church working alongside governments and charities throughout Latin America to provide wheelchairs and training to health care professionals. This significant donation was realized in Belize between May 8 and 12, with 14 volunteers from the Church and the Red Cross being trained to assemble active and all-terrain wheelchairs.

Not only did these volunteers put together and customize these mobility aids for the intended users, but they also took the time to educate recipients on how to use their new devices effectively. The donation in Belize included 349 wheelchairs along with several adult walkers, crutches, and canes, providing newfound mobility and independence for those in need.

Marshall Nunez, the Disability Desk coordinator for the Minister of Human Development in Belize, spoke to representatives from the Church, discussing the importance of follow-up reports on wheelchair recipients. These reports will be instrumental in understanding the continued needs of the beneficiaries and ensuring the aids are making a positive impact in their lives.

Expressing his gratitude for the project, Nunez voiced hope for an ongoing relationship with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This sentiment reflects the impact of the Church’s efforts, not only in terms of the immediate benefit to the mobility-impaired recipients but also in fostering a sense of community and continued assistance.

This recent endeavor highlights the commitment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to embody the teachings of Jesus Christ through action. By aiding those in need and providing essential training to healthcare professionals, the Church and its members continue to make a tangible impact on communities throughout Latin America and beyond.
