International News: 41 people killed during women’s prison riot in Honduras

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, a fight erupted between rival gangs inside of a woman’s prison in Honduras and 41 people lost their lives, BBC reports.

The prisoners reportedly set a cell on fire and some of them were shot, stabbed, beaten to death and some died in the fire.

Authorities in Honduras have launched an investigation into how prisoners managed to access automatic weapons and machetes into the jail.

In 2022, Honduran President, Xiomara Castro launched a crackdown on gangs.

According to reports, the fight inside the prison was between the most violent gangs known as18th Street Gang and MS-13.

Along with neighbours El Salvador and Guatemala, Honduras is known as a major transit route for cocaine coming from South America to the United States.
