Pesticides Control Board calls for responsible use of pesticides on occasion of World Rainforest Day 2023

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Pesticides Control Board (PCB) says today is World Rainforest Day and makes a call on Belizeans to be responsible in using pesticides to protect our magnificent rainforests.

According to the World Rainforest Day website, World Rainforest Day is celebrated on June 22 annually to highlight “the importance of healthy, standing rainforests for climate, biodiversity, culture, and livelihoods – and convenes a global movement to protect and restore them.”

The PCB says that employing responsible pesticide practices can help safeguard our rainforest ecosystems for future generations.

The PCB listed a number of practices that can help us save the planet from further damage.

“1. Targeted Application: Use pesticides only when necessary and apply them specifically to the affected areas, minimizing their impact on non-targeted organisms.

2. Read the label: Read and follow pesticide labels carefully to ensure safe and effective application. Respect recommended dosage, timing, and application methods.

3. Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Embrace IPM strategies that prioritize prevention, monitoring, and natural control methods, reducing the need for pesticides.

4. Proper Disposal: Dispose of empty pesticide containers responsibly, following local guidelines, to prevent contamination of soil and water sources.”
