International News: Corruption index ranking shows Latin America struggles to root out corruption

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The 2023 Capacity to Combat Corruption (CCC) Index that evaluates Latin American countries’ ability to root out corruption showed most countries moving backward.

According to Reuters, for the first time since 2020, the index showed a decline in average.

In addition, it demonstrated “an anti-corruption environment that in many countries is less active and mobilized than in years past.”

The CCC Index evaluated independence of judicial institutions and the strength of investigative journalism.

A score of 10 would mean that a country would likely prosecute and punish corruption.

However, 8 of the 15 countries scored below 5 indicating how countries in the Latin American region are struggling to root out corruption.
