By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Food Programme, Lola Castro said that many people in Latin America see migration as their only option having experienced several crises.
The Latin American region faces crises of climate change, COVID-19 and high food prices.
“It’s a hemispheric migration,” Castro said.
“People are transiting everywhere in the continent… all the way to the border with the US and Mexico, everywhere is affected by migration, and the governments are telling us ‘What do we do with all these masses of people transiting?'”
According to the Associated French Press, the crises affecting Haiti is also of main concern for the World Food Programme.
“The situation has deteriorated enormously,” Castro stated.
It “is really like a population taken hostage,” she expressed.
Castro emphasized that Latin America cannot be forgotten when leaders meet with EU counterparts in a joint summit in Brussels July 17-18.
