Ministry of Health and Wellness and PAHO discuss Tobacco Bill

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last week, the Ministry of Health and Wellness, through the National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), began a series of sensitization sessions for the Tobacco Bill Review Task Force.

PAHO made several presentations that reflected on the significance of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the MPOWER package.

The MPOWER package is a set of 6 key strategies that serve as guiding principles for effective tobacco control.

The discussions held during this sensitization session allowed the Task Force members to delve into various aspects of the Draft National Tobacco Bill, including provisions for comprehensive tobacco advertising and promotion bans, the establishment of smoke-free public places, packaging and labeling requirements, and measures to curb the illicit tobacco trade.

Following the session, participants expressed a firm commitment to turning the draft bill into a reality.

“The session marked an important milestone in our collective efforts to address tobacco control in Belize,” the Ministry noted.

Representatives included the Ministry of Health and Wellness, PAHO, NDACC, Belize Customs and Excise Department, Belize Bureau of Standards and Belize Tourism Board.
