By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Friday, Taiwan’s defense systems were on high alert as China reportedly deployed 37 military aircraft toward the democratic island nation. Yahoo News reports that 22 of these aircraft entered Taiwan’s self-proclaimed air defense identification zone. The Chinese aircraft contingent included H-6 bombers along with J-16 and J-10 fighter aircraft.
Taiwan regularly conducts defensive drills to prepare for a potential invasion from mainland China. This year, the drills have been expanded to include civilian involvement. In contrast to previous years where civilians were directed to stay indoors, they will now be instructed to seek bomb shelters, reflecting an increased level of urgency in these exercises.
China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has frequently expressed its intent to “reunify” Taiwan with the mainland. This stance has led to a rise in reports of Chinese military incursions near Taiwan, heightening tensions in the region.
