Belama man charged for stealing bicycle, third strike in a month of charges for drugs and giving police fake name

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Elmer Martinez, 31, a Belama resident in Belize City, was charged in court on Wednesday for allegedly stealing a bicycle, but it was his third time in court in the last month after he was arrested and charged for possession of drugs and later for giving cops a false name.

Martinez appeared before a magistrate in court #3 on Wednesday accused of stealing a black Trek brand bicycle from Yhonny Rosado valued at $1,500. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $2,000 plus one surety of the same, which he was unable to meet.

Martinez was first arrested by police on June 25 while cops monitored a house in the St. Martin area for suspicious activity. Martinez was seen leaving the yard but when he noticed the police mobile he allegedly ran and tried to swallow three pieces of foil which police later discovered contained a total of 0.7 grams of crack cocaine.

During that arrest, however, Martinez identified himself to police as Jovanni Bardalez and was arrested and charged under that name. Twelve days later, however, on July 7, he was picked up again by police on Cemetery Road and identified himself as Jose Espinosa. This time he was charged with giving police a wrong name and was fined $100 plus $5 cost of court and given until September 31, 2023 to pay, in default, 1 month imprisonment.
