Police cadet summer camp concludes in Orange Walk

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On July 28, 2023, the Belize Police Department, in collaboration with Area Representative, Ramon Cervantes hosted the closing ceremony for the cadet summer camp.

During the camp, 50 cadets received training in several areas including life skills.

Commander of Community Policing, Howell Gillett explained that summer camp for cadets allow the opportunity for law enforcement officers to engage with young members of the community in a positive and non-threatening environment.

“By interacting with law enforcement officers in a friendly and supportive setting, young camp participants develop a more positive perception of law enforcement as individuals who are there to protect and serve their communities,” Gillett said.

In addition, Gillett says that the initiative is also an effective preventive measure against juvenile delinquency.

“By keeping youth engaged in constructive activities during the summer break, they are less likely to get involved in risky or criminal behaviors,” he added.

Gillett reiterated that youth summer camps are a proactive approach for law enforcement agencies to foster positive relationships with young people, prevent delinquency, and contribute to safer and more cohesive communities.
