International News: Kenya leads the way for security force assistance in Haiti; Bahamas supports

Posted: Wednesday, August 2, 2023. 9:24 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, the Bahamas confirmed that it will support Kenya’s decision to lead a multinational force to support Haitian security forces.

The Bahamas has committed 150 people to support the effort if the United Nations authorizes the force.

According to Reuters, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged that Haiti’s neighbors join forces with Kenya to assist Haiti as the country faces a humanitarian crisis fueled by gang violence.

“The Bahamas has committed 150 persons to support the multi-national force once authorized by the United Nations Security Council,” officials in the Bahamas said.

Kenyan Foreign Minister Alfred Mutua said the intervention is an opportunity to stand “with persons of African descent across the world.”

The United States has commended Kenya for “considering to serve as the lead nation” for the multinational force.
