International News: Migrants sleep outside intake center as New York Mayor says city is full

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Several TikTok videos have gone viral of migrants sleeping outside of what once was the iconic Roosevelt Hotel in hopes of being processed since they are asylum seekers.

The intake center is reportedly at capacity therefore, migrants slept on the sidewalk outside spreading only cardboard boxes on the concrete.

Migrants continue to arrive in mass numbers and the Mayor of New York city says the city is full.

Only 2 weeks ago, Mayor Eric Adams said the city had no more space due to an influx of migrants.

“There is no more room,” Adams said.

In addition, the Mayor encouraged migrants to seek assistance in other cities.

According to the Associated French Press, data shows that since April of 2022, more than 93,000 migrants, mostly from Central and South America, have arrived in New York, which is required by law to offer free housing to anyone who requests it.

Officials say that about 106,000 people, including some 54,000 migrants, currently live in New York City’s care, either in shelters or hotels.
