People’s Constitution Commission hears Norteños want expanded rights in education, health care in updated Constitution

By Aaron Humes: Attendees at a lecture by former Magistrate and counsel Edd P. Usher on the Preamble and Fundamental Rights sections of the Belize Constitution strongly recommended the addition of “rights” to education and healthcare to Part II of the Constitution, which covers Fundamental Rights and Freedoms.

The meetings took place at the end of July at the Muffles College Auditorium in Orange Walk Town and the House of Culture in Corozal Town, under the auspices of The People’s Constitution Commission and its Secretariat.

At both meetings which each lasted about three hours, participants dialogued with the presenter on fundamental rights they perceive as being violated or in danger of being “lost,” and made strong recommendations in these areas.

The lecture series, featuring various dynamic speakers, will continue throughout the country.

The PCC has postponed a media update planned for tomorrow, Friday, as it prepares for a full-on consultation and education campaign in the coming months.
