Belizean Scouts and Scout Leaders participate in 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea

Posted: Friday, August 11, 2023. 10:05 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Twenty scouts and scout leaders from Belize are proudly representing the jewel at the 25th World Scout Jamboree 2023 in South Korea.

The 25th World Scout Jamboree 2023 brings together scouts from around the world for 12 days of adventure, fun, friendship, learning, team building and life long memories.

The event is being held from August 1 to 12, 2023 in Saemangeum, South Korea.

This year’s event is being held under the theme, “Draw your Dream”.

In addition, the Scouts are learning more about the cultures and traditions in South Korea.

They also shared more about Belize’s diverse cultures with the 43,000 participants.

“The Belize Contingent would like to thank all their sponsors who made the their dream a reality, the Korean Scout Association for putting together this amazing experience of a lifetime, The Government of South Korea & Baekseok University for hosting them on the last days of the Jamboree & to everybody back at home who has been following their journey. The Belize contingent thanks them from the bottom of their hearts,” the Troop 27 Santa Elena Jaguar Scouts said.

JP Hales, a participant, shared that the experience has been interesting and fun.

“My experience in Korea has been interesting & fun to say the very least. Traveling across the world to an unfamiliar country comes with its difficulties. Despite coming from a country with extreme heat my group and I were not prepared for the extreme temperatures we experienced here nevertheless we pushed through. We were able to share a lot about Belize & it’s culture to all the other participants & learn new things from the other participants. The most important thing though was that we were able to build life long friendships as I now can say I have friends from around the globe,” Hales said.

Felina Luk of the International Service Team(IST) said that exploring the culture in South Korea has been exciting.

“The culture of Korea has been quite a beautiful experience for us, from how timely and efficient the Korean people are. The jamboree has been a wonderful experience despite the typhoon that was approaching, we were lucky enough to only receive slightly heavy rainfall and nothing else. Our cultural day was quite a hit when we talked about Belize to many other countries like Sweden, Poland, Netherlands, Australia, Japan, Malaysia and the list goes on. The Korean Government made sure of our safety and wellbeing and it was more than we could have asked for. Our President Fernando Oliva also made sure the Belize Delegation was safe as cared for during the passing of the Typhoon. We would also like to thank those that kept us in their prayers and made sure we were okay with representing Belize,” Luk commented.

The Programme is designed around several core elements: Scouting for Life, Smart and Scientific, Safe and Secure, Sustainability, and ACT: Adventure, Culture, Tradition.
