By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the cases of COVID-19 rose by 80% last month.
This week, the WHO designated the Omicron subvariant EG.5 as a “variant of interest” following a steady rise in its prevalence.
Earlier this year, the WHO declared that COVID-19 was no longer a global health emergency, but has warned that the virus will continue to circulate and mutate.
During the period of July 10 to August 6, 2023, countries reported almost 1.5 million new cases.
WHO said that most of the new cases came in the Western Pacific region, which saw infections jump by 137 percent.
There has been an increase in cases in the United States, the U.K., and France.
Health experts continue to urge countries to lead vaccination efforts.
