By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Sunday, Guatemalans will head to the polls to vote in their presidential elections for either Bernardo Arevalo or former first lady Sandra Torres.
President Alejandro Giammattei has indicated that he will ensure an orderly transition of power following the presidential elections.
According to Reuters, the President’s comments address fears of election meddling after efforts to disqualify the front-runner’s party ahead of the runoff vote.
“I reiterate the commitment to promote an orderly, transparent and efficient transition process,” Giammattei said.
Several surveys suggest that Presidential candidate, Bernardo Arevalo is leading former first lady Torres by a large margin.
Giammattei reaffirmed that he would not stay in office “one minute longer” than Jan. 14, the scheduled day to hand over power to the incoming elected government.
