By Aaron Humes: While not a confirmation of an appeal moving ahead, this week Cabinet reported that Attorney General Anthony Sylvestre during a briefing on the ruling in Claim No. 222 of 2018 which ruled parts of the Sugar Industry Act unconstitutional, apprised that after his review of the ruling, there are “good prospects” on appealing the case.
For now, the Executive is seeing a conciliatory approach to working with Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) after its representatives wrote the A.G. indicating their commitment to working with the cane farmers’ associations and to continue dialogue on industry issues. The Cabinet sub-committee, established earlier this year and headed by Hon. Kareem Musa, was instructed to commence dialogue with BSI and the other stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the industry.
Cabinet also approved the appointment of commissioners for a Commission of Inquiry to commence by the end of August to look into the future modernization of the Sugar Cane Industry.
The Government also committed to keeping the Belize Sugar Industry Control Board and its arms operational with the necessary funding.
