International News: Gang attack on church-led protest leaves multiple dead in Haiti

By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a recent incident in Canaan, a suburb of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, seven individuals were fatally shot during a church-led protest against the surge in gang violence.

The information was relayed to CNN by Marie Yolène Gilles, director of Fondasyon Je Klere, who said a gang opened machine gun fire on the demonstrators.

The death toll may rise given the number of participants, according to Gédéon Jean, director of the Center for Analysis and Research in Human Rights.

Videos showing victims in yellow shirts, symbolizing their religious affiliation, are circulating online.

Since the 2021 assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse, Haiti has experienced increased crime and unrest.

In July 2023, images revealed Haitians escaping the threat of gangs near the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince. The escalating gang violence in Port-au-Prince has resulted in thousands being displaced, with gangs resorting to rape, torture, and murder in territorial disputes.

A group called “Bwa Kale” has taken extreme measures, including public stoning and immolation, to counteract gang violence. The United Nations Special Representative, María Isabel Salvador, expressed concern over this escalation in a July report.

Vigilante actions have caused hundreds of deaths and disruptions in supply chains, leading to rising costs of essentials in several Haitian areas.
