By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On August 25, 2023, over 1,700 educators from the Orange Walk and Corozal districts convened for the inaugural session of the Teachers Constitution Education Forum at the Corozal Community College.
This collaborative effort is being done by the People’s Constitution Commission (PCC), the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU), and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST).
The event marked the largest gathering for the PCC to date, underlining the importance of constitutional awareness in the teaching community.
The distinguished speaker, Edd P. Usher, captivated the audience with an in-depth exploration of fundamental rights and the preamble of the Belize Constitution.
His presentation sparked high interest among the teachers, who actively engaged in the conversation. Teachers had the opportunity to raise concerns and seek clarification on fundamental rights and potential inclusions.
Cesar Ross, Director of Good Governance, shared valuable insights into good governance and accountability in the different areas of the Constitution (legislative, executive, public service, and municipal governance) or gaps within. He also briefly updated the gathering on the recent UNCAC implementation country review held in Belmopan. The interactive question-and-answer segment that followed encouraged teachers to voice their queries and provided a platform for meaningful exchanges.
Teachers were invited to participate in the People’s Constitution Commission Citizen’s Survey throughout the day.
This interactive survey was made accessible through QR codes, which teachers easily accessed on their phones and tablets provided by the Statistical Institute of Belize. The commitment to inclusivity ensured that every teacher had the chance to share their insights and opinions.
The Teachers Constitution Education Forum proved to be a groundbreaking event in fostering constitutional awareness among educators.
The collaboration between the PCC, BNTU, and the MoECST underlines the commitment to a more informed and engaged teaching community.
As the series of forums progresses, the impact on the educational landscape of Belize is expected to be profound.
The second of this forum will be held on August 29 in Belize City.
