By Celeste Chang: Clinica Nueva Esperanza, started nine years ago in the village of San Jose Palmar neighboring Orange Walk Town, is now one of three companies that has entered contracts with the Government of Belize to provide Belizeans with access to National Health Insurance (NHI). It has now given the residents of Orange Walk a place to turn to when their medical needs have to be met, but they are struggling to make ends meet.
Founder Dr Perlita Aldana has served in the national health system as a family medicine specialist before she became a vascular surgeon. It is a family medicine clinic and Dr Aldana stated in an interview that her hopes for the clinic is to provide top medical services in the area: “…the NHI came about earlier on this year and we saw the possibility of taking it on and giving this much needed service to our community.”
Registration has been going well and there has been an unexpected bump in obtaining Social Security cards by those who may not have otherwise seen the need for one.
Clinica Nueva Esperanza and its staff hope to provide affordable, high-quality primary health care to citizens of Orange Walk under the NHI program.
