International News: Airline introduces ‘adults-only’ zone where children are banned

Posted: Sunday, September 3, 2023. 4:28 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: As per a recent report by ABC News, solitude-seeking passengers might soon experience more tranquil skies. Corendon Airlines announced plans to debut an adults-only section, restricting entry to those under the age of 16, on its flights traveling between Amsterdam and Curacao starting this November.

This initiative by the Turkish airline is aimed at providing a peaceful atmosphere for passengers traveling without children. Simultaneously, it offers relief to parents, ensuring them that their children’s natural behaviors won’t be a disturbance to others.

The airline’s blueprint reveals that out of the 432 seats aboard its Airbus A350 jets, 93 regular seats and nine extra-legroom seats will be reserved for the adults-only zone. Positioned in the front, this section will be delineated from the rest of the cabin using a wall or curtain, ensuring maximum privacy.

For those eyeing this child-free oasis in the skies, the airline has announced a reservation fee of 45 euros ($49). Those opting for the spacious extra-legroom seats will be required to shell out 100 euros ($109). To put the duration into perspective, a typical flight from Amsterdam to Curacao spans approximately 10 hours.

Brett Snyder, a travel agency proprietor and author of the Cranky Flier blog, voiced potential demand for such a seating arrangement. He pointed out the appeal of a quieter environment, especially for a heavily leisure-focused airline like Corendon, which often caters to families with children. However, he also cautioned that the experience might resemble the older times when the demarcation between smoking and non-smoking sections was thin, and passengers could still sense the smoke.

Scott Keyes, the mind behind the flight-search platform, Going, opined that Corendon’s additional fee is attractively priced, likely to draw a considerable number of takers. He further added that such innovative ventures serve dual purposes. They not only enhance the passenger experience but also act as a potent marketing strategy, providing much-needed visibility to emerging airlines in a competitive landscape.

However, it’s worth noting that Corendon isn’t pioneering this concept. Scoot, a Singapore-based budget airline, already offers a section with an age restriction of 12 years. Furthermore, Malaysia Airlines, in 2012, briefly introduced a similar model, reserving a 70-seat economy section on its Airbus A380 jets exclusively for adults. The initiative underwent modifications later to accommodate large family bookings.

Only time will reveal if this new venture by Corendon Airlines will set a precedent or fade away like past attempts. Regardless, it’s evident that airlines continue to innovate, catering to the diverse needs of their passengers.
