By Horace Palacio: According to FOX Weather, what was formerly identified as Invest 97L has now transformed into Tropical Depression Fifteen off the coast of Africa. Observations indicate that this depression is rapidly gaining momentum and is poised to upgrade to Tropical Storm Nigel in the near future.

Tropical depressions are defined as cyclonic disturbances with maximum sustained winds of less than 39 mph. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) assigns these depressions a sequential number based on their emergence in the hurricane season. As for Tropical Depression Fifteen, its current winds are gauged at about 35 mph, while its trajectory is a northwestward drift at a speed of 12 mph.

The FOX Forecast Center is currently predicting a high probability for this depression to mature into Tropical Storm Nigel in a few days provided its wind speeds escalate to or exceed 40 mph. There is also a growing consensus amongst weather specialists that this system might escalate even further, potentially transforming into a hurricane next week.

The FOX Forecast Center commented on the future path of what may soon be Nigel, “Environmental conditions are conducive for further intensification, and the likelihood of it becoming a hurricane next week, well to the north of the Caribbean islands, is on the rise.”

Further, FOX Weather hurricane expert, Bryan Norcross, provided insights into the storm’s future course, suggesting its trajectory might resemble that of Hurricane Lee. However, at the present moment, only Bermuda seems to be under any potential risk.

The Atlantic recently passed its statistical hurricane peak on September 10. This period witnesses the ocean temperatures peaking, whilst wind shears, which can disrupt storm formations, tend to be at their lowest. This combination makes conditions ripe for the formation and intensification of tropical storms and hurricanes.
