PM Briceño reflects on “Turbulent Times” in Independence Day Speech; Remains optimistic about national plan

Posted: Friday, September 22, 2023. 11:00 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: In a somber yet optimistic speech on the nation’s 42nd Independence Day, Prime Minister Briceño addressed the myriad global challenges that the country faces. The message was a reality check, yet simultaneously a reaffirmation of the nation’s resilience and ongoing progress under #PlanBelize, the government’s blueprint for national development.

Briceño commenced his speech by spotlighting the “turbulent times” that the world finds itself in, noting the ongoing war in Europe— the first such conflict since WWII— as well as the devastating impacts of climate change. From superstorms affecting regions near home to forest fires in the northern hemisphere and catastrophic floods in Africa and Asia, the Prime Minister did not mince words about the global crisis.

Continuing, he highlighted the economic turmoil causing suffering to those who can least afford it. A surge in inflation has been troubling the everyday lives of citizens, making the staples of living increasingly unaffordable. Coupled with this is the looming threat of debt—sovereign, personal, and commercial— that endangers not just national but global recovery post-pandemic.

For a small, open democracy like ours, the Prime Minister acknowledged that these challenges seem “formidable and intimidating.” The scale of the threats could potentially roll back decades of human advancement.

However, in the face of these considerable challenges, the Prime Minister pointed to a beacon of hope: #PlanBelize. Since its implementation following the election of November 2020, the national plan has exceeded even the most optimistic expectations, according to Briceño.

“This is not just a plan on paper; it is our north star,” the Prime Minister said. “It’s been guiding our strategies to navigate through these troubled waters. Despite the global upheavals, we’ve shown that it is possible to maintain steady progress.”

Briceño called for national unity and a collective effort to continue steering the nation through the current global crises. “Challenges are indeed overwhelming, but if we remain steadfast and focused, there is no storm we can’t weather.”

The Independence Day speech was more than a reflection of the difficult times; it was a rallying cry, imbued with a spirit of hope and resilience. In the midst of global chaos, the Prime Minister insists, there is a blueprint for stability and progress in the form of #PlanBelize.

For a nation celebrating 42 years of independence, the message was clear: the journey ahead is fraught with challenges, but there is a path forward.
