Special Envoy for Development of Families and Children celebrates International Day of Sign Languages

Posted: Saturday, September 23, 2023. 9:28 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  Today is recognized globally as International Day of Sign Languages.

The day provides a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users.

The United Nations note that during the 2023 celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages, the world will once again highlight the unity generated by our sign languages.

Deaf communities, governments and civil society organizations maintain their collective efforts – hand in hand – in fostering, promoting and recognizing national sign languages as part of their countries’ vibrant and diverse linguistic landscapes.

“Today, we honor and recognize the diverse and vibrant world of sign languages. It’s a reminder to embrace inclusivity, break communication barriers, and promote equal access for all.

Let’s celebrate the rich cultural heritage embedded within sign languages that unite deaf communities worldwide,” Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rosanna Briceno noted.

The Special Envoy urged all Belizeans to spread awareness, share knowledge, and support advocacy initiatives on this special day!
