By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A powerful category 5 Hurricane Otis made landfall into Mexico’s Pacific coast early today.
According to CBS, by 6am today, the dangerous storm had weakened to a category 2 after throwing torrential rains and damaging winds in Acapulco, Mexico.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Otis struck land near Acapulco, in Guerrero state.
The beach resort town experienced “catastrophic damage.”
Videos on social media showed strong wind and rain lashing Acapulco.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that Guerrero was hit hard by the hurricane, which completely knocked out communications in the state.
The dangerous hurricane damaged roads and caused landslides along a major highway leading into Acapulco.
As of this morning, strong winds and rain continue to affect Acapulco.
Mexico has since deployed troops with specialized equipment to assist with rescues.
