By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) donated 1000 Maypan coconut seedlings to 20 farmers from the Orange Walk District as part of a project to improve the coconut value chain in Belize.
The farmers attended a short ceremony and a planting demonstration at the Yo Creek Agric Station this morning, where they received 50 seedlings each.
The planting demonstration was conducted by Enrique Rivas, JICA project officer with MAFSE.
“The seedlings were provided by JICA as part of a commitment by that agency to assist Belizean farmers with coconut value chain enhancement to increase their ability to access the market and enhance income earning opportunities,” MAFSE said.
The Ministry of Agriculture Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Victoriano Pascual and Mr. Yoshikazu Tachihara from JICA were present at the event.
The Agriculture Ministry added that coconut seedlings will also be distributed in Toledo.
