Elderly Belizean man perishes in early morning house fire

By Horace Palacio: A residential fire in the early hours of Tuesday in Belize City claimed the life of an 82-year-old man, local authorities reported.

The blaze, which engulfed a two-story house on the corner of Banak and Zericote Street, was reported at around 4:00 AM. Firefighters, under the command of Ms. Rubio, and personnel from the Crime Investigation Branch Precinct 2, were dispatched to the scene following an emergency call.

Initial investigations indicate that the fire started at the front portion of the house. The homeowner, William Wattson, a retired Belizean born on March 19, 1941, was inside the property at the time.

Despite the rapid response and efforts of the fire service, the fire resulted in the tragic loss of Mr. Wattson. His body was discovered after the flames were extinguished. He was later transported to KHMH, where he was identified by his granddaughter, Leotyna Usher. Dr. Alaien Gomez pronounced Mr. Wattson dead at 5:21 AM.

The scene of the incident was processed by SOC Technician Janelli Rosalez. Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

This incident has deeply affected the local community, highlighting the importance of fire safety and emergency preparedness. Mr. Wattson was a well-regarded member of his community, and his sudden demise has left many in mourning.
