International News: British warship set to join Guyanese Forces as tensions rise with Venezuela

Posted: Sunday, December 24, 2023. 12:14 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: According to The Telegraph, the United Kingdom has announced plans to dispatch a warship to Guyana, demonstrating its support for the South American nation amid its escalating territorial dispute with Venezuela. HMS Trent, described by the British government as a “defense diplomacy” vessel, is set to engage in joint exercises with Guyanese forces after Christmas. This decision highlights the UK’s commitment to backing its Commonwealth partner in the face of growing tensions.

The deployment of HMS Trent comes amidst increasing friction between Guyana and Venezuela over a contentious mineral-rich border region. The area in question, Essequibo, spans 62,000 square miles and is abundant in resources like oil, gas, and minerals. This region, located in western Guyana, has become a focal point of international concern, particularly with fears that Venezuela might attempt an invasion.

The root of the conflict dates back to the late 19th century when Guyana, then British Guiana, was a British colony. Both nations have laid claim to the territory, leading to a long-standing dispute. A 1966 Geneva Agreement effectively nullified an earlier border established in 1899 by international arbitrators. However, Venezuela has renewed its claim, especially following recent discoveries of oil and gas in Guyana. The matter is currently under consideration by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The situation escalated earlier this month when Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro rejected the ICJ’s jurisdiction and conducted a referendum on annexing the disputed region. The referendum, in which a majority of Venezuelan voters allegedly supported Maduro’s claim, has been met with widespread dispute. In response, Guyana has placed its armed forces on high alert.

HMS Trent, currently stationed in Barbados over the Christmas period, will soon make its way to Guyana. Due to the shallow waters, the offshore patrol vessel will not be able to dock in Georgetown, Guyana’s capital.

In a statement of solidarity, Lord Cameron, the UK Foreign Secretary, emphasized Britain’s resolve to work with regional partners to ensure Guyana’s territorial integrity and prevent further escalation of the conflict. This stance was echoed during a recent meeting between Lord Cameron and Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, in Washington, where the US reaffirmed its support for Guyana’s sovereignty.

Earlier in December, David Rutley, the Foreign Office minister for the Americas and Caribbean, visited Guyana, asserting that Venezuela had pledged to avoid the use of force and further escalation in the dispute. Meanwhile, David Lammy, Labour’s shadow home secretary and of Guyanese descent, condemned Maduro’s actions, likening them to Putin’s tactics, and asserted the UK’s unwavering support for Guyana.
