Bicycle thief fined $300 for stealing $400 bicycle

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Jaylon Jones, an 18-year-old Belize City resident, was fined $300 for reportedly stealing a $400 bicycle which he was caught with red-handed.

Jones appeared in court on Tuesday unrepresented and was read a single charge of theft. He pleaded guilty, and because he is a first-time offender, the court imposed a non-custodial sentence of a fine of $300 plus $5 cost of court, which he must pay by February 29.

According to a report made by the complainant, on December 31 he was notified by neighbors that someone had stolen his male beach cruiser bicycle, valued at $400, from the front of his yard. The complainant and his neighbor then got in a vehicle and followed the culprit, meeting up with him at the Belcan Bridge. The owner made a report to police and Jones was arrested and charged.
