International News: New migrant caravan forms in Mexico as frustrated migrants complain about visa delays

Posted: Tuesday, January 9, 2024. 8:52 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A migrant caravan of about 2,000 people formed in Mexico today.

According to Reuters, the group of migrants have been on the move since Christmas Eve and are frustrated after the Mexican government’s promises of transit visas last week never materialized.

The group began walking to Oaxaca and hoped to reach Tapanatepec by nightfall.

The group includes people from Central America and the Caribbean taking the journey in hopes of finding the ‘American dream’.

Last week, the group had dispersed after boarding buses to processing centers in the hope of receiving travel permits, which would allow them and their families free transport through Mexico.

However, most migrants never received the permits.

In 2023, record numbers of migrants attempted to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

Authorities continue to warn against taking the dangerous journey and the risks that migrants face.
