International News: U.S. Coast Guard intercepts boat carrying $11 million worth of cocaine in Caribbean Sea

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States Coast Guard says that 1 person from the Dominican Republic aboard a fleeing boat carrying $11 million worth of cocaine died after the Coast Guard fired at the boat.

According to the Associated Press, the Coast Guard officials aboard a U.S. Navy ship in the Caribbean Sea fired “warning shots and disabling fire” during the Jan. 1 incident and found an injured crew member when they boarded.

The person received first aid and was medically evacuated to the Dominican Republic and died shortly after.

“The Coast Guard takes any loss of life seriously and is working to investigate the incident,” spokesman Lt. Cmdr. John W. Beal said.

Two other suspected smugglers were arrested and 848 pounds (385 kilograms) of cocaine were seized from the boat.
