Belize City man charred to death in late night house fire

By Aaron Humes: Police continue to investigate a house fire that resulted in the death of a man on Wednesday night.

At about 11:00 p.m. information was received of a house fire at the corner of Dolphin Street and Gibnut Street, Belize City. Police observed a small wooden structure measuring approximately 15 feet by 25 feet engulfed in flames and being put out by Fire Service personnel. However, the house had already been destroyed by fire and upon canvassing the area Police observed the charred and unrecognizeable remains of a male person in one of the bedrooms.

Initial investigation reveal that the occupants of one of the apartments were sleeping when they were awakened by smoke coming from a room on the front portion of the building where an elderly male person resides. They exited the building and attempted to put out the fire with the assistance of some neighbors, however, the fire got out of control.

The elderly man, nicknamed ‘Cutty’, and who apparently works at Pou’s meatshop, awaits formal identification as police investigations continue.
