Honduran woman who arrived in Belize only six days ago fined, jailed and to be deported

By Aaron Humes: 39-year-old Loren Vanessa Mercado Rosales, a Honduran national, is the latest migrant caught improperly entering Belize and faces an almost immediate return home.

Only six days ago, Rosales crossed the banks of the Mopan River into Belize from Guatemala and made it to Belize City, where she was hired for a political campaign.

But at her arraignment at the Magistrates Court where she pleaded guilty to illegal entry, it was found that she has no passport or other legal documents. She told the court that her daughter is in the United States and that she wants to “get legal,” but she also acknowledged being homesick.

However, her home for the next six months at least will be the Central Prison at Hattieville, after she was unable to pay the standard $1,000 fine.

After that, she will be expelled from Belize by order of the court and Immigration Department.
