Galen University to lead mural restoration; Challenges new Town Council

By Horace Palacio: Galen University is issuing a call to action for residents of San Ignacio and Santa Elena to join them in restoring a beloved mural that has been recently vandalized. The mural, a vibrant expression of the twin towns’ social assets, has been a source of pride for the community.

The restoration effort will take place on Sunday evening at 4 pm, and Galen University is urging all “Eagles” (the university’s alumni) in the area to participate in this important act of community revitalization.

Dr. Cynthia Eve Aird, Provost of Galen University, expressed her disappointment over the defacement and posed thought-provoking questions: “What does this defacement of public property actually say about the civic pride of our people? Do the vandals who defaced this beautiful work of art even know what this mural represents?”

Dr. Aird further underscores the significance of the mural, highlighting that it was created by young adults from the community as part of two university courses. Many of those same young artists will soon be casting their votes in the upcoming local elections.

The Provost extended an open invitation to the next Town Council and Mayor, offering Galen University’s support in restoring the mural to its former glory. She emphasized that the mural is a cherished landmark, appreciated by Belizeans and tourists alike. “When we deface our public spaces, we deface our twin towns and all who live here!” she stated.
