New six-team Premier Women’s League of Belize kicks of this weekend

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Without any previous public announcement, the Football Federation of Belize on Thursday announced the launch of a new six-team Premier Women’s League of Belize which should kick off its first competition this weekend.

“The Football Federation of Belize recognizes the undeniable talent, dedication, and passion of women in the sport and through the PWLB, the FFB aims to elevate athletes, celebrating their achievements while inspiring future generations of players, coaches, and fans alike,” the Football Federation of Belize said in a statement introducing the new league which is expected to push women’s football above the level of the National Amateur Women’s League (NAWL).

Two NAWL A teams are making the move to join the PWLB, namely Jewel Fury and the Sagitun Girlz, the two most recent NAWL champions. They are joined by Napoles, Caribbean Tire, Rising Phoenix, and Old Capital Turf Warriors.

“The FFB continues working towards its fervent commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing a platform for the development of female football,” the FFB said as it launched what it termed as “our inaugural Premier Women’s Belize Pilot Project 2024, marking a significant milestone in the realm of sports and gender equality”.

The PWLB is expected to be the highest level of women’s football in Belize as the  Premier League of Belize is for men’s football.

The inaugural weekend will feature three games at the FFB Stadium on Saturday starting with the Rising Phoenix taking on the Sagitun Girlz at 3:00 pm.

The second match will pit Caribbean Tire against the Old Capital Turf Warriors at 6:00 pm.

The day will close with Jewel Fury matching up against Napoles at 7:00 pm.
