By Breaking Belize News Staff: Sanaselmo Torres, 58, a Belize City fisherman has been remanded to prison after being busted with crack cocaine for the third time in only four months and being unable to settle outstanding fines owed to the court from previous drug charges.
Torres appeared in court last Thursday and was read a single charge of possession of a controlled drug, to wit, 0.1 grams of crack cocaine. Torres disagreed with the police version and a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.
He was offered bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount but the court discovered he had unpaid fines from previous convictions totaling almost $800. He was told he needed to settle the old fines before he could make bail but he could not so he has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he can do so.
