By Horace Palacio: Belize will proudly participate in a landmark regional event as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) celebrates International Girls in ICT Day on April 25th, 2024. This year’s hybrid celebration, anchored in Georgetown, Guyana, will see the CARICOM Girls in ICT Partnership team up with the Restore a Sense of I Can (RSC) organization under the inspiring theme ‘Inspiring Youth Innovation, Leading Change in CARICOM.’
This exciting event places a bright spotlight on the crucial role of STEM education, especially in the field of ICT (Information and Communication Technology). It offers a unique platform to showcase the vast career opportunities available within these dynamic sectors. Organizers have set an ambitious target, aiming to engage a staggering 50,000 participants hailing from 15 different Caribbean countries.
Belizean students and young professionals are encouraged to register for the event, which promises a stimulating program packed with insights from influential speakers within government, industry, and education. Breakout sessions filled with presentations, workshops, simulations, gaming, and motivational talks will provide valuable hands-on experiences. Cutting-edge technologies like generative artificial intelligence will be explored alongside essential topics like digital hygiene, strategies to empower girls, and perspectives from parents and teachers.
Since its inception in 2011, Girls in ICT Day has served as an annual reminder of the need to bridge the gender digital divide. This global initiative supports technology education and skills training to inspire more girls and young women to confidently pursue rewarding careers in STEM fields.
