Earth Day 2024 celebrated across Belize

Posted: Monday, April 22, 2024. 11:06 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Across Belize, environmentalists and conservationists join in the celebration of Earth Day 2024.

The theme for this year’s Earth Day is Planet vs. Plastics.

The United Nations noted that the planet is losing 10 million hectares of forests every year – an area larger than Iceland.

“Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Nature is suffering. Oceans filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat, wildfires and floods, have affected millions of people” the U.N. noted.

The U.N. added that Climate change, man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can accelerate the speed of destruction of the planet.

Minister of Sustainable Development, Orlando Habet encouraged all Belizeans to become Greening across Belize ambassadors, to protect the planet we live on and to inspire others to plant and safeguard our environment.

Minister Habet also urged all Belizeans to eliminate and reduce pollution.

In recognition of Earth Day, Minister Habet jointed the Youth Empowerment Alliance (YEA), and Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Alex Balona celebrated Earth Day by planting trees at the Santa Cruz Park in Santa Elena and the Independence Park in San Ignacio.
