International News: United States and Canadian Navy stage joint mission through Taiwan Strait

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, a U.S. and Canadian warship sailed through the Taiwan Strait in a joint mission, Reuters report.

The warship conducted a “routine” transit of the strait “through waters where high-seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law”.

“Chung-Hoon and Montreal’s bilateral transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the commitment of the United States and our allies and partners to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” a joint statement noted.

Usually, U.S. warships transit the strait, however, it is unusual for them to do so with those of other U.S. allies.

 In recent months, China has ramped up military drills near Taiwan amidst heightened tensions.

China views Taiwan as its territory and has long vowed to “reunify” the self-governing democratic island.
