By Aaron Humes: News 5‘s Mike Rudon and cameraman Darrell Moguel report that this morning, as they attempted to travel into the Sarstoon River, their vessel was intercepted by the Guatemalan Armed Forces.
On Tuesday of this week, the Government of Belize lifted the Sarstoon Regulations Order, once again opening the southern boundary of Belize to all vessels and civilians of Belize. This followed the announcement of an arrangement to work on a protocol for use of the river.
But it appears that Guatemala has not told its military personnel to relax, as according to Rudon and Moguel they were ordered to leave “national waters” – Guatemalan, not Belizean; Guatemala claims the entirety of the river.
