Man found guilty of double murder

BBN Staff: For the first time in a long time, the Courts of Belize have found a man guilty of murder.

He is Ernest Thurton Jr., 25.

On Wednesday he appeared in a trial without a jury before Justice Adolph Lucas. He was found guilty of the 2012 double murder of Robert Young, 50, and Frank James, 41.

Both deceased were at a dockyard on North Front Street cleaning fish when Thurton and another man approached them and started to argue over a stolen bicycle.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that Thurton shot both of the men dead.

However, in court, he claimed that he was at home at the time of the incident.

He will be sentenced to prison on October 8th but because he has already spent six years on remand, those years will count as time already served.
