More weather concerns as the year comes to a close says Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology

By BBN Staff: The Barbados-based Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), in its recently released newsletter, highlighted several weather concerns as the extended drought is expected to come to an end
towards the close of 2019.

The CIMH said that the regional drought which has been the standard for the majority of 2019, has caused increased heatwaves and heat stress issues in vulnerable areas, but that the end of the drought also places some countries, such as Belize, in danger of other adverse weather effects.

“Drought impacts in currently affected areas are generally expected to decrease towards November. The annual peak in very wet and extremely spells is expected to raise the concern for flash floods and flooding in Belize and the Islands,” the CIMH said.

The CIMH said that severe drought has developed in much of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, Belize, parts of Hispaniola, Trinidad, Turks & Caicos, southern Belize, easternmost Cuba, Haiti and northern Leewards and that most of these nations have been experiencing these conditions in the long term.

The CIMH’s predictions for the drought to end in November differ slightly from the expectations of the National Meteorological Service of Belize, which said that it hoped the drought would be over by October. The Met Service noted that September would be a transition month, with the country seeing rainfall closer to normal levels, with
the decline of the El Niño weather phenomenon.

That prediction has started to manifest, with several areas previously experiencing below-average rainfall, have been seeing some rain since the beginning of September.
