United Nations commemorates international day for the elimination of violence against women

Posted: Monday, November 25, 2019. 11:13 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Around the world, women and children are victims of physical and sexual forms of violence.

As the world and the United Nations (UN) commemorate international day for the elimination of violence against women, a video has surfaced online of a Belizean woman who was allegedly the victim of domestic violence.

The woman was reportedly attacked by her partner who left her with bruises and bleeding profusely from her face.

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) continues to be a widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violation in our world and remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and the shame surrounding it.

It manifests itself in physical, sexual and psychological forms, encompassing: intimate partner violence (battering, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide); sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber- harassment).

United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, says that sexual violence against women and girls is rooted in centuries of male domination.

“ Let us not forget that the gender inequalities that fuel rape culture are essentially a question of power imbalances,” Guterres said,

The UN says that while gender-based violence can happen to anyone, women and girls are particularly vulnerable.

Violence against women continues to be an obstacle to achieving equality, development, peace as well as to the fulfillment of women and girls’ human rights.

The UN notes that almost 750 million women and girls alive today were married before their 18th birthday; while 200 million women and girls have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM)

The 2019 theme for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape’.

Several public events are being coordinated for this year’s International Day. Iconic buildings and landmarks will be ‘oranged’ to recall the need for a violence-free future.

#GenerationEquality #orangetheworld and #spreadtheword.
